Cryoablation of the prostate can be used just like HIFU to kill cancer cells in specific areas. Cryo uses small needles inserted into the prostate that cool down with Argon gas to bring tissue temperatures down below -20 to -40 degrees Celsius which cells cannot survive. There are different needles that can generate different size iceballs to fit specifically to your prostate. Each needle can be monitored with nearby temperature sensors (thermocouples). A urethral warming catheter protects the urinary channel. Cryoablation is particularly well suited for tumors on the top of the prostate (anterior) and for radiation recurrent disease.
