High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)
HIFU Specifics
-
High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is the least invasive option among all focal therapies. It is a cutting-edge treatment that only targets the cancerous tissue while sparing healthy cells. HIFU has been performed in Europe for many years and since its FDA approval in 2015, is now the most widely used option in the United States.
-
HIFU is ideal for patients with intermediate-risk prostate cancer that is confined to one side of the prostate. Some patients with low risk disease may also be candidates if they are not comfortable monitoring their cancer.
Men with enlarged prostates with significant urinary symptoms, those with high risk or very high volume prostate cancer, latex allergy, or cancer in the anterior prostate may not be appropriate candidates.
-
✅ Anesthesia & Imaging: Performed under general anesthesia in an operating room. Once you are asleep, the procedure begins with a specialized ultrasound probe inserted into the rectum.
✅ Targeting Cancer Cells: Using MRI and ultrasound fusion, the urologist maps the treatment area along with a safety margin.
✅ Precise Energy Delivery: The ultrasound probe emits high-energy waves, heating and destroying the cancerous tissue. A cooling balloon around the probe keeps the rectal wall safe.
✅ Confirmation & Completion: A contrast agent is administered at the end to ensure there is no blood flow remaining in the treated area, confirming treatment of the target area.
-
✅ Time: The procedure lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. A Foley catheter is left in place before you wake up.
✅ Post-Treatment Care: The catheter will stay in for a few days to drain the bladder. Your doctor may give you medications such as Flomax and Cialis.
✅ Recovery: Most patients experience minimal discomfort and can return to normal activities within a week.
-
✅ Success Rate: After HIFU, an MRI and biopsy will be done to determine if residual cancer is present. HIFU has been shown to eradicate cancer in 80-90% of patients.
✅ Minimal Side Effects: The majority of patients do not experience incontinence. Although most men retain erectile function, some patients may experience erectile dysfunction. making it a favorable option for preserving quality of life.Item description
